Fans of the new Hulu/FX hit series Shōgun are noticing a striking resemblance between one of its characters and a certain actor.

The series, which is available to watch on Disney+, features a Japanese actor called Hitoshi Masaki, who some have noticed looks similar to Rob McElhenney.

A post on X containing a screenshot from the show went viral, as the user wrote: “This guy in Shōgun looks like Japanese Mac,” referring to McElhenney’s character in the US sitcom It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Ronald ‘Mac’ McDonald.

McElhenney, who also famously co-owns Wrexham football club with Ryan Reynolds, replied to the post saying: “Great find. Time to do some research on my family history…”

Since then, McElhenney has reposted the viral image on his X page, accompanied by the caption: “I gotta find this guy. I have some questions.”

Other viewers of Shōgun appear to be having similar thoughts. One user wrote on X: “Had to google the ridiculous question ‘Is Rob McElhenney in Shōgun?’ during this episode”.

Another replied to the original viral tweet saying: “Before even reading the caption I thought ‘is that Rob McElhenney’.”

The replies continued, with users writing how they “immediately thought the same” and are “so happy someone else noticed this”.

One user referenced the format often used in titling episodes of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, writing: “‘The Gang Goes To Japan’ confirmed for next season”.

It’s not the first time this year that McElhenney has gone viral. In January, the actor was snapped by his wife Kaitlin Olson watching the Philadelphia Eagles’ playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on his mobile phone during the 75th Emmy Awards ceremony.

He posted the moment on X, alongside a caption which read: “Who schedules the Emmys the same night as the @eagles #gobirds #FlyEaglesFly”.
