Blossoms have shared details of a new album, ‘Gary’, and dropped the summery title track. Find out more details below.
Announced today (June 3), the forthcoming LP will mark the fifth studio album from the English indie rock group, and the long-awaited follow-up to 2022’s ‘Ribbon Around The Bomb’.
It is set to arrive on September 20, and produced by the frequent collaborator James Skelly of The Coral, alongside Jungle’s Josh-Lloyd Watson. The latter also produced with the band on both ‘What Can I Say After I’m Sorry?’ and ‘Nightclub’.
‘Gary’ will also see Tom Odden and co. join forces with BRIT-nominated singer-songwriter CMAT, who has co-written two tracks, titled ‘I Like Your Look’ and ‘Why Do I Give You The Worst Of Me?’, on the album.
To celebrate the album announcement, the group have shared the title track from the project, as well as the star-studded accompanying music video.
The video follows on from the band’s previous visuals for ‘What Can I Say After I’m Sorry?’, and sees appearances from Rick Astley and Sean Dyche, who reprises his role from the former.
“The video is directed by myself and my brother Ewan Ogden and it picks up where our last video left off. The song is based on a true story I heard on the radio last year – Gary the eight-foot fibreglass Gorilla was stolen from Reynard Garden in Carluke, Scotland,” explained the frontman of the visuals.
“We’ve recreated the story on screen with Rick Astley playing Andrew Scott, the owner of the garden centre, and the band stealing Gary. This video was so much fun to make and was shot again on 16mm film, on location around Stockport, the Peak District, and Derbyshire. The song itself is the centrepiece of the album and after toying with different titles, we kept going back to Gary. In the end, it could only be ‘Gary’.”

As for the whole album, ‘Gary’ is comprised of 10 tracks and is set to see the members once again capture the simple energy and joy of being in a room creating new material.
‘The heart of this record is about the five of us recording live in a room together for the first time in years. We wanted to capture the energy of what it’s like when five friends decide to start a band and make music together,” Ogden added, also describing the writing sessions as “the most inspiring few days we’ve had as a band”.
A press release also states that other big highlights for the LP include tracks ‘Big Star’, ‘I Like Your Look’, and ‘Mothers’ – which each capture their own unique narrative.
“The album tracks themselves are based on different stories, mostly from personal experience. On ‘Big Star’ after seeing a well-known music journalist in the Chateau Marmont, I debate going over and introducing myself but then shyness gets the better of me and I don’t,” explained the singer.
“‘I Like Your Look’ is a tipping of the hat to Blondie’s ‘Rapture’ and a wink to Joan Baez’s ‘Time Rag’, and lyrically it explores a tongue-in-cheek approach to high fashion. ’Mothers’ is an ode to my and Joe’s friendship and it references the fact that our mothers were friends back in the ‘80s.”

Blossoms started teasing new music at the start of the month when they encouraged fans to call a mysterious hotline. The Stockport indie rockers advertised the number with a video featuring a tow truck driving down a road with a giant gorilla statue on its back end, along with the number.
The announcement of the new material after they headlined Club NME in February. It also arrives as they are gearing up to play a huge outdoor show in Manchester this summer with support from the likes of Inhaler, Shed Seven and The K’s.
Blossoms are also set to make appearances at the Isle Of Wight Festival, TRNSMT and Liam Gallagher & Friends’ Malta Weekender. In August, they’ll open for Tom Grennan at his gig in London’s Gunnersbury Park. You can find any remaining tickets for UK shows here
