‘Squid Game’ season three confirms release date

Netflix have announced today (January 30) that the third and final season of smash hit Squid Game will arrive on the service on June 27.

Season two of the show, about a deadly game that draws in financially desperate people as contestants, was a big success for the streamer upon its debut last month, and a teaser for the third season followed shortly after its conclusion.

In a press release, Netflix described the premise of what’s to come: “Picking up where the second season left off, season three explores the choices Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) will make amidst overwhelming despair. As the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) plots his next move, the surviving players find their decisions leading to increasingly dire consequences with each round of the deadly games”.

It also hyped up the excitement of the next chapter, saying: “This season promises to push the limits of suspense and drama, keeping viewers glued to the action”. Since debuting in 2021, the show has broken all manner of records for Netflix, becoming one of its most iconic original series.

In NME’s four-star review of season two, writer Nick Levine described it as “breathlessly exciting and chokingly emotional” saying that “You’ll be left gasping as Squid Game gets its tentacles around you and squeezes hard”.

Later in the release, the streamer hailed its success, saying: “Squid Game season two became the third most-watched season on Netflix ever, garnering an impressive 68million views upon its debut — breaking records for the most views in a premiere week — and ranking number one in the Top 10 TV Series (Non-English) list across 92 countries”.

Coming just six months after the previous season, its swift arrival was hinted at by series director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who said earlier this month that it was coming “sooner than you think”.

Elsewhere, star Park Sung-hoon admitted he had reservations about playing Transgender female character Cho Hyun-ju, but that he “wanted to approach it as thoughtfully as possible”
