Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell has recalled the time that Dave Grohl once asked him to punch him in the face.
The frontman discusses his memory of the bizarre interaction with the Foo Fighters main man in a clip that has been shared from the new Razorlight documentary Fall To Pieces.
The film, which is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the UK now, chronicles the first meeting between Borrell and drummer/songwriter Andy Burrows in 11 years, followed by the story of the band’s 2021 comeback shows.
In the clip, Borrell is sitting in a car reflecting on his Grohl encounter. “Yeah, I punched Dave Grohl in the face, yeah,” he says. “But it was only because he asked me to! He was going, ‘Come on maaan, don’t you fucking British rockers, you’re so gay, punch me!’ And that was his game, he used to like doing shots and then just like hitting each other in the moosh.”
Borrell is quick to point out that his experiences with Grohl were all positive. “He was nice, Dave Grohl was a very kind person actually, as far as my interactions with him went.”
As someone off-camera replies that “nobody has a bad word to say about him”, Borrell does however reply: “That’s not true…camera off!” The clip then abruptly cuts off.
Razorlight and Foo Fighters did share a bill on December 10, 2005 at a huge outdoor show at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. That day, Oasis topped the bill, with The Coral and The Subways also playing.
Fall To Pieces, meanwhile, received its premiere back in 2022 at the Raindance Film Festival but has had to wait for a commercial release until early 2025. Directed by Ben Lowe, it is named after the band’s 2006 single ‘Before I Fall To Pieces’ and focuses on the often fractious relationship between Borrell and Burrows, tracing the band’s early days in the early 2000s up until the 2021 reunion.
Razorlight released their fifth album ‘Planet Nowhere’ in October, the first full-length with their classic line-up since 2008. Borrell spoke to NME last year about the impetus for making the new album, explaining that he would have considered ending the band if they hadn’t been able to make it.
“I said to everyone: ‘If new music doesn’t work, let’s move on.’ I was ready to ceremonially say goodbye to Razorlight,” he said. “It would have been a major deal. I was contemplating all kinds of ways to end it, some involving Japanese swords. But this album wanted to be made.”
They have also just announced a UK headline tour to take place in April and May – see the full list of dates here, and buy your tickets here from February 14.
