Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone is returning to cinemas for one week to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary.
The film will be shown around the world between August 27 and September 3, accompanied by 12 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage that has never previously been screened in cinemas.
All eight Harry Potter films will also return to the big screen during the same week, although the additional footage will only accompany Philosopher’s Stone. Exact screening times will vary between cinemas, with tickets going on sale on July 31.
Directed by Chris Columbus, Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone premiered on November 16, 2001, and introduced Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
The film, which was released as Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States, became the first of eight instalments released between 2001 and 2011.
The screenings are part of the annual Back To Hogwarts celebrations, which take place around September 1 – the date students return to Hogwarts in the stories. This year’s programme will also include fan events around the world and an online showcase featuring further franchise announcements.
The anniversary comes ahead of HBO’s new television adaptation, which is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day (December 25). Its first season will also adapt Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone.
Production began at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in 2025, with Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton leading the cast as Harry, Ron and Hermione respectively.
The first trailer was shared in March and divided viewers, with some praising its visual faithfulness to the original films and others questioning why the story needed to be adapted again.
HBO boss Casey Bloys has confirmed that the series will not return annually due to the scale of the production, although he said the broadcaster intends to avoid “huge gaps” between instalments. Work on the second season is already underway.
Earlier this week, cinematographer Adriano Goldman described filming the series as “brutal”, explaining that restrictions on the working hours of its young cast can sometimes leave the three leads available for only “an hour and a half”.
The production has also attracted backlash surrounding author and executive producer J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans views and public hostility towards the transgender community.
John Lithgow, who will play Albus Dumbledore, revealed that he considered quitting the series following criticism of his involvement, while Hagrid actor Nick Frost has publicly distanced himself from Rowling’s comments.
Paapa Essiedu has also revealed that he received racist abuse and death threats after being cast as Severus Snape.
