Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G shows up at Wimbledon following new movie rumours

Sacha Baron Cohen has revived Ali G at Wimbledon, amid reports that a new movie based around the character has been filmed in secret.

The comedian and actor popped up in character on Centre Court during the Wimbledon men’s singles final yesterday (July 12), where Jannik Sinner beat Alexander Zverev to retain the title.

Cohen was seen in full Ali G mode, including the familiar yellow-tinted sunglasses, skull cap and gold jewellery, as well as a Wimbledon-branded tracksuit top.

He posted a clip on his Instagram page, in which he sits in the stand and says: “It’s like the World Cup of something called tennis, which is like a crap version of ping pong. Them say that tennis is better played on grass, which is why I intend to sell as much of it while I iz here. So if you want some herbal remedies, me got anything you want.”

The post included the caption: “I iz BACK! And if u iz at dis borin wimbledore final lookin 2 get grand slammed, I iz here wif de hookup 🌱🍄❄💊💉 dm me, especially if u iz fit.”

It comes after recent reports that a new Ali G film has been completed, although official details of the project remain thin on the ground.

The character, a satire of appropriated street culture, was first introduced on Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show in 1998, with Cohen interviewing unsuspecting guests while using slang-heavy lines of questioning.

Ali G’s popularity led to Da Ali G Show in the early 2000s, the 2002 film Ali G Indahouse and an appearance in Madonna’s ‘Music’ video.

Cohen later found global success with other characters from the same comic universe, including Borat and Brüno. His 2006 film Borat grossed more than $260million worldwide, while the sequel Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was secretly filmed and released via Amazon MGM Studios during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new Ali G project is reportedly the second feature-length film based around the character, with InSneider reporting that the new movie was “in the can”.

Cohen’s representatives have not publicly commented on the reports.

The comedian has revived Ali G sporadically in recent years, including for Ali G: Rezurection in 2014 and later appearances on US talk shows and awards ceremonies.

Away from Ali G, Cohen has also appeared in dramatic and supporting roles in films including Les MisérablesHugoSweeney Todd and The Trial Of The Chicago 7. Last year, he was also revealed as the villain Mephisto in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

More recently, he led the fantasy comedy Ladies First, playing a male chauvinist transported to a world where women hold societal power. The trailer for the movie confused some fans online, with one describing it as “Borat but make it feminism”.
